I am considering buying a Thorp with bent main gear. I have been told that some of you have had success straightening them. This set is bent approx. 10 deg. inboard and 10 deg. aft. Is there any chance of salvaging them?

I have straightened several with good results. If the metal shows NO signs of cracks, straighten it cold. There is a difference of opinion that it needs to be re-heat treated after straightening. When these gear come back from the heat treat, they are bent and need straighten
Ken Brock straightened my original gear. I had the good favor of knowing Steve Whitman, the designer of this style of gear and he had no problems with cold straightening.

Bill,
Thanks for the info that gives me some hope. I haven't actually seen the a/c yet to inspect it as it is in TX and I'm in IL.

I straightened a set with a 20 press. Took all 20 ton, but they look pretty good.
