My original set-up has the cooler in front. It provides exceptional cooling at all attitudes, & there has never been a single crack in almost 23 years - it is very solid. Mine sticks up a little bit above the level of the cylinder baffle. I couldn't find very many pictures of it, but here are three that show the position & some of the baffle reinforcement/structure to support it. One advantage is better access to everything else & less clutter at the rear of the engine & firewall. The additional length of oil lines is more than offset by that, & the absence of large diameter ducting. With a good Vernatherm, I've never had much of a problem with cold winter conditions, but I did make a simple snap-on plate to reduce inlet area, which I've rarely ever used. I can snap it into position without removing the cowl cheek.
