Well, this happened last Saturday - the unkown pilot walked away with minor injuries and refused medical attention....

...and then this advert appeared on Sunday in Barnstormers....

THORP T18 • $1 • ACCEPTING OFFERS • Parting out Thorp T18, complete aircraft, 2 Lycoming 0290 D2 1 0 smoh, new canopy, new landing gear. • Contact Glenn E. Bashforth, Owner - located San Rafael, CA USA • Telephone: 415-686-0146 . • Posted December 21, 2014 • Show all Ads posted by this Advertiser • Recommend This Ad to a Friend • Email Advertiser • Save to Watchlist • Report This Ad

I'd say there is at least a bucks worth of sheet metal there....maybe a good gear assembly and a wingtip.

Glad the pilot survived - I never would have guessed it based on the photo.

Having said that, it might not be the same guy.......but a helluva co-inka-dink, given the San Rafael, CA connection.

It is amazing how a T18 can be torn to shreds in a crash and yet the people in it be little hurt. If the pointy end does not hit first, the chances of survival are very good. Back in the late 60s a man took off from Reno headed south. The line boy did not secure the oil filler cap and the engine failed near Manzanar,CA. He dead stocked it in on an old abanded army traing field but a sheep rancher had excavated a ditch there. The end result was that the plane cartwheeled and both wings were torn off and the tail and engine separated. I think his wife was with him and neither one suffered any serious injury but I'll bet they were sore for a while! John Thorp designed a tough airplane!!!
