In the lycoming manual is says my engine is rated at 2600 RPM. I've got a whirlwind prop and I find that 10-15 sec after I level off if I don't pull out the throttle I can get much higher than 2600 RPM so I have to manage that after cruise, descending, etc. I see other guys say they are running WOT with their 290's and running much higher than 2600 RPM. My question is there any reason I can't go higher? Am I going to damage something, wear something much faster, etc, etc?

Thanks

Chad

Reno racers I’ve talked to go as high as 3500rpm. You will, mostly likely wear the engine a bit faster. But the biggest problem I know of is that the valves can float. If stock springs are used, you can possibly hit a piston with a valve.
Might ask your prop manufacturer if there are any harmonic issues above 2600.

As Cubes said, most RPM limits are on the prop.

Yeah it’s “rated” at 2600 ... the motor can spin up ... I’m confident if you want to run it to 2700 you’re fine. The prop was most certainly built with that number in mind.

Thanks guys, yes definitely not a prop limitation - it's designed for 2700.

Dang, picked up 8MPH - not bad cruising around at 190MPH on an o-290. Tried to upload a pic but keep getting an error.
