I have an IO360 on my Thorp and it does not have an oil filter. Does anyone know if the Oil Filter Adapter kit from Casper Labs (CL 1000A-EXP) can be used on this engine in the Thorp. This is the adapter that bolts on where the oil screen is on the back of the accessory case and has a right angle turn for the oil filter to spin on to. Specifically, will the oil filter clear the engine mount tubing with sufficient clearance to allow the filter to be spun off and on?

I’m about 95% sure it won’t fit. The only filter that I have been able to find that fits the thorp with a stock Lycoming filter adaptor was the K&N HP-1009 and that filter is no longer available. Looks like I’ll be going to a remote filter mount soon.

I cant answer your question, but I can tell you that a remote oil filter is the cats meow. I followed Rich's remote oil filter setup and I am very glad I did.

I went through a lot parts last year trying to find a filter adapter that would work on my T-18 (O-320-E2D). I initially thought I'd use the standard Lycoming adapter with the short K&N filter (1002 or 1009) which has worked for others. It didn't work for me. I didn't have enough room to install the filter with the adapter installed on the engine. The nipple in the adapter could have been cut down to provide a little more room. I decided to try the B&C adapter I purchased for the IO-540 on my Biplane. The B&C adapter works great on my Thorp with a 3/4" spacer. It clears the mount and cowling and uses a standard CH 48108-2 aircraft filter. The B&C and Casper filter adapters look very similar. It may work. Here's a couple photos of the B&C adapter installed on my plane.

Hope this helps,

Marshall

Which B&C Adapter did you use. I'm thinking the BC700-H is the one you're talking about, but I wanted to confirm that.

Also, where do I go to find information about Rich's remote oil filter setup?

Yes, the BC700H is the adapter I installed. My adapter is from the first production run so it's annodized Gold rather than Clear like the new adapters. It won't clear the engine mount without the 3/4" spacer so don't forget to order one of those.

Or, you could build your own like I did, long before there were any available commercially.

BTW, I'm not using the P-Mags shown in these pictures any longer.

Think about a remote filter setup. Other than John Evens', most of them put the filter at an odd angle that must surly be a mess when it comes time to change them. You should have the new filter full of new oil when you install it to preclude a big "burp" of air going through the engine at start up. I use the Air Wolf set up and am pleased with it.

I bought my remote filter setup from Summit Racing. Rich walked me through with all the part numbers for all the items he used, but I am unable to locate that post in my searches. If you decide to go this route, I will be glad to locate all the part numbers that I used. Here is a picture of Rich's setup

I sure appreciate all of the great information you guys are giving me. If I go with a remote oil filter, can I put it in line with the oil cooler line (the oil coming out of the engine to the oil filter, and then on to the cooler before returning to the engine), or do I need to go with an adapter that bolts on in place of the oil screen assembly so that I have dedicated lines going to the filter?

Post subject:  Re: Oil Filter

If you install it in the oil cooler circuit you will only be filtering a portion of the circulating oil, and none at all when the oil is cold & the vernitherm is open. You would still have the filter screen housing that will have to be removed & checked/cleaned periodically. Some people have done that though.

I put this on the back of the motor to route the oil from the motor to the remotely mounted filter. Its also from Summit.
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ctr-22-595 I'm not sure if the link is the exact one you need, but its representative of the one I used. Its great because you tighten it with the gold bolt on top, and you can rotate the black housing to any angle that best suits your needs.

Do the bolt holes on this adapter from Summit match the mounting flange on the back of the engine where the oil screen assembly is, or does it mount somewhere else?

You will need to replace the screen/vernitherm with an oil filter adapter to make this work

Take a look at Blox Racing BXGA-00115-PO this is a kit that uses AN fittings. You supply the hoses
