I put an approx. 1/4" at the base of my steel S-18 sticks and ran wires for PTT, Aileron, elevator, AP disconnect and comm. flip flop . The hole size also included a rubber grommet . :o Checked every annual . No cracks ;) BOOM ! Like others have said , don't get crazy with the hole size . Use the min. required .

I believe I have a 3/16" hole low on the stick before it enters the socket. I did make my sticks out of heavier wall tubing than standard, but they are aluminum. Having given careful attention to making the hole smooth with no crack encouraging nicks or imperfections, & having polished it, I have a warm & fuzzy feeling about it. No cracks in 23 years. If you can bring it out through the socket, so much the better.
