I've been using the "Chris Fast" flap assembly instructions in newsletter 53. Chris indicated monel pop rivets on lower surface beam/skin i/f. I am not finding flush pops at 1/8" so thinking Chris was talking dome and that flush rivets in this area would be mostly for aesthetics in an unobservable location. Have other approachs been adopted since Chris's writeup?

Thanks
Tom

Using a homemade die and a hammer, I have made many monel pops into flush heads. I can give more info if you're interested.

I have found that using an pneumatic rivet puller with 80/100 psi it will countersink itself into the countersink,

Many roads to Milpitas. Thanks

A discussion on how to reform monel pops to flush would be greatly appreciated.

On the cherry max, I used 020 for skin giving me total thickness of 045. I wasn't sure how rigorous to be on minimum grip length. Do you use the -2 for most of the wing skin/rib locations with accessabiity issues.

Drill a countersink hole in a piece of steel that fits the rivet. Drill a hole the size of the pull shank in a piece of bar stock. Place rivet in countersink hole and place bar over the shank and whack it with a hammer. Voila! Countersink rivet.

I can't recall off hand the dash number of the CM rivet I used in those locations , but a -2 sounds about right . A CM rivet gauge will confirm that . The CM needs to be the right length to achieve the correct grip length to form the required formed "bulbed" head . Go to www.cherryaerospace.com , they have all the info on stalling these little gems . Ebay is your best bet for CM rivets . I found sealed packages of 100 for as little as $10.00 . :o Your rivet mileage may vary ! :P

Anyone building anything should be aware of McMaster-Carr. Easy to deal with online and they have a lot of stuff. Just be wise if you're substituting fastener strength in critical areas.
