Just finished the Basic Med process. It really went pretty easy, went to the AME I have been going to for years. The exam took about 30 minutes, I did pre prepare the paper work using the AOPA web site and brought it with me. Went home ,and again went to the AOPA web site and took the on line course including the final exam, this also took about 45 minutes. Following are a few things that I ran into while taking the on line course, some of the windows have an area under the first paragraph that sez "read more" this is a hint to scroll down. Although, you can take a break while taking the on line portion and come back to it later, I recommend that you use a computer that has printer access, This is to be able to print the required certificate after passing the quiz. Using common sense for any of the quiz questions (think to be on the safety side answer) that you may not be sure of got me a 90% score on the first attempt.

The local AME isn't too keen on the new Basic Medical. He won't do one because his insurance won't, he says, cover it. He says the legal wording introduced late in the legislative process will leave common GP's with too much liability, and he claims one of the larger medical institutions here, Unity Point, has barred it's physicians from performing them, due to liability issues.

Being in good health, I just went ahead and got the 3rd class.

I have thought this would pop it's ugly head as your local doc does not want the libility

Looking at the Basic Med form/exam items , I see no real difference between BM and the 3rd Class requirements other than the fact the 3rd Class info is sent to OK, City and the BM results are kept in your log book . This does help keep the FAA out of your drawers , but finding someone to administer the BM exam is going to be a real problem . I recommend Dr. Kevorkian as he has had no complaints to date ? ??? Is he still kicking ? :o

My PCP that I have been going to for years is not too excited about Basic Med, but says he will do it when I have my annual physical. He is one of those who is afraid that airplanes are going to start falling out of the sky and killing hundreds of people. Citing the Sport Pilot statistics that show that crashes caused by medical issues are no greater among the driver's license crowd than those who get a medical certificate from an AME are ignored. He does say that there should not ever be any liability issue, as any doctor will already carry costly liability insurance. His group does new hire exams and drug tests, physicals for CDL applicants, etc., so he is unconcerned about any liability, and thinks that docs that refuse, citing liability issues, have some other motive. Seems to me that the main benefit is being able to go 4 years in between exams instead of two if you are someone who does not have a physical on a regular basis. Even if you do get an annual physical, it saves the redundant cost of also having to see an AME. My 3rd class does not expire until next March, but I will probably take the BM paperwork to the doc in the Fall when I will be due for an annual physical, and start the BM process. Bob H.

I'd asked my AME about that. He claims the wording changes introduced at the behest of trial lawyers make it certain GP's will get hit with suits and will likely loose. Whether courts read the law so remains to be seen. Whether it affects the cost of doctor's liability insurance is yet another matter. That AME predicts the Basic Med will die in a few years due to legal wrangling. Time will tell.
