Hi Bob, if you zoom in on Rich's picture above (s-18 engine mounting, flaps....) you can see a doubler on the outside of the side skin just behind the gear mount.

I've updated my firewall plans. Current thinking is that the oil cooler and filter will be on the engine not the firewall.
I'm drawing in the option of a UL power engine installation( they now have a 180HP engine available).

For the many combinations of the lycoming engines available is there any consistency in the locations for throttle and mixture cables to come through the firewall, it seems any photos, drawings or comments have very different arrangements?

Stug,

Wait until you have the engine hung before you cut holes in the firewall for the control cables. Some of us have actually mounted the carb backward (it really doesn't know which way it is going) to accommodate the movement of the cables, especially using a throttle quadrant.

Stug: Bob is right wait... I planned mine as to have the most direct route to the carb with no bends or routing around cockpit items . My cables are below the tank . Each install with be a little different depending on the type of engine/carb. Plan your firewall pass thru carefully to avoid excessive holes .

Thanks I certainly won't be rushing to drill any holes, there are likely to be a number of revisions to my drawing before I get tempted to pick up the hole saw. At this stage it is still very much a desktop planning exercise.
The number of holes adds up quickly when you start adding all the grommet shields.
One idea I had was to try and align all the grommet shields in such a way that for each shield one of it's fastening holes lines up with the rivet holes for the fuel tank brackets, that way the shield acts a bit like a doubler for the fuel tank brackets and the rivet or screw serves two purposes.

If one was to use a fuel injected lycoming instead of a carb does that have much impact on the cable locations?
