For a long time now i've been looking to build some new wing tips, since 90 % of the planes on the flight line have some for of modified wingtips and I wanted to see what the out come would be on the Thorp.. It took a bit of time and money to build them but they came out great and work super. I have for many hours flown with Gary Jacobson and we fly along with each other at 2350 rpm, so that became the standard to match. After the flight today we figured that I gained about 7 plus knots or so and the lateral stability seens a bit more stable. All in all a good improvement and i recommend this as a good modification to make. I think that Jim Grahn might have a few in stock. Paul Mac Michael

Since I put on my Hoerner tips I am now 6'5" , have blonde hair and blue eyes ! ::) I am also a kinder , gentler person ! :P Paul is right they look great and I think they do improve performance a bit . Not sure if they make them for a standard T-18 ? S-18 , yes . ;)

Our tips are S18 only. Unless you are good with fiberglass.

Paul "Copterpilot" demonstrated 'Hot Wire Foam cutting" at the Western Airpark T-18 fly Inn and Car Club meet this month. I think he might be willing to demonstrate the technique @ KVIS this week, so don't miss it!
I picked up his educational foam cuts, and went on a buying spree yesterday. I bought nichrome wire at the hobby shop, and 2"x2'x8' XPF board @ Lowers for the tips & hardware @ Home Despot aviation departments to make the bow for the cutter.
I have the original rounded wingtips (and Ratray style wheel pants). Those wingtips sound like stale potato chips if squeezed. I gotta make some replacements!
This is really for a winter project. Northwest flying weather is so precious that it can't be wasted with un-necessary indoor activity.
An aside: Tonight's EAA 326 monthly meeting speaker gave a Forflight lesson for iPad users. I use Avare on a Android tablet, and the lesson was an eye opener. Foreflight is an AWSOME replacement for a paper chart! I'm iPad shopping now...

If you like your android tablet, I would check all of the options before switching. Garmin has a nice app too. I installed free trials and played with them side by side before selecting one. The Garmin app works almost exactly like my GPS and works on either. I selected Foreflight because Garmin had an unreadable fuzzy area around the Chicago sectional and I really had to search for the edge of the sectional in Foreflight. On the first Foreflight update I downloaded, the edge of the sectional blanks out everything under it. On the bright side, I have a legend to look at when I forget what all the marks mean but it may or may not be there after the next update.

Thanks to a good Samaritan, I have found the setting that turns off the sectional legends in Foreflight.

New S-18 owner! I'm resurrecting N102PM, a tricycle Thorp (gasp!). The plane has Hoerner wingtips and I would like to install lights on this baby. Does anyone have lights on their Hoerner wingtips? Any and all suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Scot

Lites on my S-18 . Took a piece of fiber glassing foam and shaped to fit the lites and the tip . Not as hard as I thought . Still hate working with the fiber glass goo ! :P

Those look nice Rich! These tips are already painted but I guess they can always be repainted. I'm guessing you fabricated, then painted the wingtips. Are those LED nav lights/strobe light combos?

Yes fab then painted as this was a new build AC . :o I used the Kuntzleman LED combo strobe/position lites . Installed back in 2011 and have worked flawlessly . ::) Now of course they have more "advanced" units and have a smaller footprint . http://www.kestrobes.com

Hi Scot - another strobe/position light combo to look at might be Aveo Engineering. $500.00 kit - direct wire to the buss bar. Combo Nav/Pos/Stobe.....The strobes are brighter than Bill Williams!!
