T-18 Mutual Aid Society
In 1963 the Thorp T-18 was seen at the Rockford EAA Fly-In, and by early
1964 the interest had grown by leaps and bounds. Many T-18's were being
built in dark corners of garages all over the U.S. Shortly thereafter the
scores of phone calls, and the hundreds of questions being ask by the
enthusiastic builders began pouring in. It became apparent that some form of
written record needed to be kept that would contain all of these questions
and there answers. Something that would be a common ground for all Thorp
Builders and Pilots to share there building and flying tips, as well as
their frustrations and problems in the construction of this wonderful little
airplane. So it was then, that in 1964 the T-18 Mutual Aid Society was
born. Fathered by Dick Cavin, the T-18 Mutual Aid Society began producing a
Newsletter, that was filled with building tips from T-18 builders and
included hints and inspiration from John Thorp. The T-18 Mutual Aid
Society became a Family of devoted Thorp followers, who graciously
extended invitations for fellow Thorp drivers to stay in their homes during
their cross country travels. This tradition remains today, and
is one of the truly unique pleasures of our organization.

The Newsletter

The
T-18 Newsletter is published four to five times per year, and is considered
to be the BUILDERS MANUAL for the T/S-18. There are currently
143 issues. It is published in a black and white printed format that
is mailed using the standard postal system. Beginning with issue number 115,
the most current newsletter is available for on-line viewing or downloading from this
website. The yearly subscription rates are listed above. With your paid T-18
Mutual Aid Society Membership you will get the hardcopy printed version of
the newsletter mailed to you (unless
you choose not to receive it), and be able to download and/or view the color
version from this site. To view a free on-line sample click the link
below.
Newsletter Back Issues
The complete set of all 143 issues is
available for $165.00 plus shipping. Any single issue is available for $2.50
plus postage. Any issue from 115 to the most current can be burned on a
CD Rom in Adobe Acrobat Reader format (PDF) for the same price as a hard
copy back issue. Newsletter issues 1 through 44 were condensed,
rewritten and placed in a spiral wound booklet by Lu Sunderland in 1986. The
complete set of newsletter back issues consist of this booklet, and the
remaining individual newsletter issues. I am working on condensing and
rewriting issues 45 through 90 and when completed they will be placed in
book form as well. Eventually I plan to offer the complete T-18 newsletter
inventory in digital PDF format.
