I am trying to figure out the length of the rudder cables for a standard t-18. I am looking at the #518 to determine length, but I cannot find anything here. Is there a standard length for the cable or do I just need to measure for myself?

Dean,

Just did my rudder cables. I measured twice and got 150.8 inches total, hole to hole, including fittings. Best as I can tell, math from the drawings says about the same. I really suggest you measure your own, since everyone's can be a little different. Tolerances have a way of stacking up, and the turnbuckles are limited to maybe +/-.75" range (?) I used electrical wire for measurements (less stretch than string) and averaged R & L together.

Request - can someone post a photo of a typical "notched right brake pedal" sometime. (For clearance with the tank mount.) I can't seem to find one in the NLs or the forum albums.

Thx. My brake pedal shows evidence of contacting at the bottom, as well as at the top.

Dick,
I don't have a pic handy but even if I did it would be pretty anti-climactic. You're going to end up cutting a 2 inch square out of the upper left hand corner of the pilots side right hand brake pedal.

Pretty darn good drawing Lee ! Reminds me of my Junior High School Days during one of my Mechanical Drawing Classes trying to make a 3-D drawing of a block of wood using a pencil and a T-square on a piece of poster board! You got a deduction in your final grade for every erasure ! This was 1965 and computers were still an idea in Bill Gates garage !

Yeah, nice sketch. That's pretty much what I figured for contact at the top of the pedal. BUT ... What about the bottom edge? Move the pivots back, I guess.

It may be possible the pivot points are not in the correct location ? It may be possible the anchor points on the floor are not in the proper location ?

The Tank supports have to be relieved for pedal room, then a doubler is riveted to the support to stiffen it up. its easier when you have the support out of the plane when the build is happening. Mike archer Informed me of this when I was in the middle of the build, had a sketch added to the drawing packet......Dan

That's another way to solve it but the vast majority of Thorps out there do not have the notched tank support.

I think in Dick's case since he does not fall into the "tall" category (sorry Dick) he could move the pedals back to the per-plans position and cut a notch in his pedal. At least that seems like the less invasive route.

Dick,
I just thought about this. You have your rudder off don't you? With the cables disconnected the pedals are pulled forward by the return springs and lay against the tank supports. Before you jump in there and start moving the pedals back, pull the rudder cables back and check the clearance again. The rudder pedals are or should be vertical in the neutral position, and stop shy of the tank support, hence the reason only the top of the brake pedal is trimmed off.
